SummersRadio™ Best Of 2011 Countdowns! Part One: Top 25 Rock & Indie! #'s 25 - 21!

SummersRadio™ Best Of 2011 Countdowns! Part One: Top 25 Rock & Indie! #'s 25 - 21! It's time to begin SummersRadio™'s Best Of 2011 countdowns! They shall be divided into two parts - part one consisting of 25 Rock & Indie tracks - and part two consisting of 25 Electronic and Club tracks! Of course it's not always easy to classify songs and such practices can be limiting, but at the same time it doesn't seem right to me to compare (as an example) a Umek track along side one from Arcade Fire - as it's like comparing bananas to pears. :)

So while the Top 25 Rock & Indie list may include a couple songs that are electronic based and the Top 25 Electronic & Club list may include some full on club remixes of rock and indie songs - the purpose is to generally separate the songs primarily designed for the feet from those for the heart and mind. Either way, when it comes down to it both lists are for your ears (which are connected to the mind in most humans) and truthfully speaking one can really dance to anything if you choose to (so the feet need never be left out) so this was done mainly for flowing purposes, so I hope you enjoy this year's Best Of 2011 countdowns!

To eliminate any unnecessary nattering and focus on the music itself I will simply post each song sans any additional comments - but I will include the original link in each case should you wish to find out more information. I will also make note of any songs that (still) feature valid free legal download links for your enjoyment. So prepare yourself then for numerous hours of quality music featuring SummersRadio™'s selections for the Best Of 2011 - starting with Part One: Top 25 Rock & Indie... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Downloads! Queen/ NIN/ Tall Sasha!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Downloads! Queen - 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (Tall Sasha 2012 Bootleg)/ Nine Inch Nails - 'Closer' (Tall Sasha Bootleg Remix) Sasha Tosic aka Tall Sasha is a dj/ producer from San Francisco that has released his latest remix online - of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'! If this remix if to your liking you can download a copy for free from his Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/tall-sasha/queen-bohemian-rhapsody-tall-1

This is the 'Tall Sasha 2012 Bootleg' of Queen's 1975 classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' - I quite like the vocal effects on this one... Enjoy!

Bonus Track! Nine Inch Nails - 'Closer' (Tall Sasha Bootleg Remix) I've been working away at compiling my Best Of 2011 lists this week (the unveiling of which shall begin tomorrow) and for some reason I thought I already posted this remix previously (it was released in the spring) but I didn't - and it's too good to miss! If this remix is to your liking it's also available as a free download on Tall Sasha's Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/tall-sasha/nine-inch-nails-closer-tall and you can keep up with him on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/SummersRadio/199636386720349?ref=ts#!/tallsasha1

Nine Inch Nails 'Closer' (aka 'Closer To God') first appeared on their 1994 album 'The Downward Spiral' - and is a modern rock/ industrial/ electronic classic - from it's perfect electronic drum sound (sampled and modified from punk/ rock legend Iggy Pop's 1977 song 'Nightclubbing') right down to it's sexually direct lyrics. Although there have been many underground remixes of it made over the years, I hereby declare this one to be the finest one I've heard... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Motor featuring Martin L. Gore!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Motor featuring Martin L. Gore - 'Man Made Machine' (official video)/ (Black Asteroid Remix) Motor have just released their new single - and it features the vocals of Depeche Mode's Martin L. Gore! Motor are a London based duo consisting of France's OlyMotor, and Bryan Black who is from the U.S. Although primarily a techno act, they're new album (their fourth) is going to be a bit different, as it will be a vocal driven electronic album. Besides Martin L. Gore the album will also feature the vocals of another electronic legend - Gary Numan - as well as Douglas McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb), and Billy Ray Martin (Electribe 101) among others.

'Man Made Machine' is the first official single and video from the as yet untitled forthcoming new album - and it's been released as a four track EP which is currently available exclusively on Beatport. http://www.beatport.com/#release/man-made-machine-ep/847683

The EP features the 'Original Extended Mix', plus remixes from Radio Slave, Chris Liebing, and Black Asteroid (an alias of Motor themselves). First up we have the official video - which is an edited version of the original. Not surprisingly the track sounds rather like Depeche Mode (particularly their hit 'Personal Jesus') as any vaguely electronic song featuring Gore on vocals will. (If you didn't catch the post on Martin Gore's new project VCMG with Vince Clarke earlier this month you can do so here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/12/summersradio-new-music-vcmg-vince.html)

Martin sounds a bit different than usual here though - he's singing deeper which gives the song a darker feel - this is the official video for Motor's new single 'Man Made Machine'... Enjoy!

This is the 'Black Asteroid Remix' of 'Man Made Machine'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Umek!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Umek - 'Split'/ 'Falling Up The Stairs' Slovenia's Umek has just released a brand new EP today - just in time for your New Year's Eve parties! The 'Split' EP features two tracks - the title song  - which is a homage to the city of the same name in Croatia - and 'Sunday At El Row' - which is a tribute to the El Row club in Barcelona. The EP is released on his 1605 Music Therapy label and is currently available exclusively on Beatport. http://www.beatport.com/#release/split-ep/851150

This is the title track 'Split'... Enjoy!

Bonus Track + Free Download! Umek also released a new song online last week as a free Christmas gift called 'Falling Up The Stairs'. I decided not to post it at the time because although he's released a number of great tracks in the past as free downloads (Fenaton 2011 comes to mind), I didn't find 'Falling Up The Stairs' to be one of his stronger tracks. I'm not particularly fond of the vocal sample in this one - and it loops throughout the entire song. So while I didn't think it worthy of leading it's own post - it's fine as a bonus track - and you certainly can't complain about the price!

This is 'Falling Up The Stairs' - and if it's to your liking you can download it for free here: http://www.umek.si/UMEK-falling-up-the-stairs Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! The xx!

SummersRadio™ New Music! The xx - 'Open Eyes' (Demo) The xx have just released a new demo online on their website called 'Open Eyes'! No official word yet on whether or not the song will appear on the final tracklisting of their new album which is due out in the first half of next year - but this demo was made during it's recording. The album will be the follow up to their acclaimed self titled 2009 debut - which the London band hope to have completed in time for the festival season.

Apparently their new album is inspired by club music - although you certainly wouldn't know that from listening to this - The xx sound like their usual sparse low-key selves. I've always preferred their remixes to their originals, but as this is only a demo, who knows what it might actually sound like when it's completed. For now though, they sound a bit sleepy - like they've had a bit too much turkey this weekend and the tryptophan is kicking in. :)

This is the demo version of their new song called 'Open Eyes'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Flow Machines!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Flow Machines - 'I Was Born On Christmas Day'/ 'Any Other Day' Seasons Greetings Humans! Today we present the third post in our Christmas trilogy - and also our third free download Christmas gift! Obviously I didn't make these gifts myself - the artists have - but Christmas is about sharing, so I'm honoured to share their fine music with you!

Flow Machines are an indie electronic pop band from Manchester that have released a cover of one of my most favorite Christmas songs - Saint Etienne's 'I Was Born On Christmas Day'. 'I Was Born On Christmas Day' was first released in 1993 - a duet between Saint Etienne's wonderful vocalist Sarah Cracknell and The Charlatans Tim Burgess. Today is also Bob Stanley's birthday (one third of Saint Etienne's trio), so the songwriting is apt! :)

Flow Machine's cover features the guest vocals of Louise Turner who also sang on Elbow's album 'The Seldom Seen Kid'. If this charming cover is to your liking you can download a limited copy for free from the band's official website here: http://www.flowmachines.com/

Their cover sounds a bit the Human League covering Saint Etienne - which makes sense considering that their debut single in 2008 was a cover of the Human League classic b-side 'Hard Times'. This is the fun video for 'I Was Born On Christmas Day' which features an awesome - and well synchronized - collection of 'found footage' of old school toys (the shifty eyes on Action Man are highlarious!) and memories from Christmas's past... Enjoy!

Flow Machines are set to release their new album called 'Hi-Res' on January 14th - and they released the first single from it last month - this is the video for 'Any Other Day'... Enjoy!

You can keep up with Flow Machines on Facebook here:

He/ they released their self titled debut album last November on their own self titled label. The album features over 20 classical and rock musicians - and is available both on cd and download from their Bandcamp page - as well as on itunes.

'Christmas Eve For Two' was released last month, and is one of two new singles released by the band this year. If the festive song is to your liking you can download a copy for free from their Bandcamp page here: http://summerfiction.bandcamp.com/album/christmas-eve-for-two-single

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Gospel Music!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Gospel Music - 'Apartment' Gospel Music is the side project of Owen Holmes - who is also a member of Florida's indie pop band Black Kids - and he/ they have released their catchy new single as a free download! Gospel Music released their debut album called 'How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL' in October on the Kill Rock Stars label.

'Apartment' is the second single released from the album and it's an uber cute duet with vocalist Madeline Long. If it's to your liking you can download a copy for free on Soundcloud courtesy of the band's manager here: http://soundcloud.com/shakermakerpr/gospel-music-apartment (or simply click on the download arrow below) and you can keep up with Gospel Music on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/SummerFiction?sk=wall#!/gospelmusicfla

Any honest partier knows that while going out to clubs and bars can be fun - it can also be just as fun to stay in on a Saturday night sometimes. The song tells the story of an on again off again couple that consider some of the advantages of having an intimate night in... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Clouds!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Clouds - 'Mr. Pink' (Original Mix)/ 'Articles' (Ado Remix) Sure, I'm going to post a few Christmas songs - but naturally I'm going to mix it up with some new music as well! Tiga's new sublabel Twin Turbo have just released their latest single - I particularly like their new motto on their Soundcloud page:

'Twin Turbo - over 100 days of bringing you the most foolproof, fool-tested battle MP3s, fit for only the hardest of drives'.

The sixth release on the label is from Clouds - who are from Perth Scotland - with their new four/ five track EP called 'Matter'. The EP features four songs on itunes and a bonus fifth track on Beatport - the title track, three versions (just two on itunes) of the song 'Articles', and a song called 'Mr. Pink'.

Several of the tracks on the 'Matter' EP (as befits the label's current motto) are amazing full on mind blowing acid techno bangers! I've chosen my two favorites thus far - I actually like them so much that I had to buy them before I even finished this post! First up we have the third track on the EP - this is 'Mr. Pink'... Enjoy!

This is track four on both verisons of the EP - the rather excellent 'Ado Remix' of 'Articles'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Music News! Pet Shop Boys!

SummersRadio™ Music News! Pet Shop Boys - 'Blue On Blue'/ 'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas' (New Version) London's Pet Shop Boys have just announced that they're releasing a new compilation in February! It's called 'Format' and is a collection of b-sides and bonus tracks - featuring 38 songs available on a double cd and download.

Few duo's are talented enough to have a career as lengthy as Pet Shop Boys have - let alone have as many b-sides worthy of such a compilation. 'Format' is essentially the follow up to the 1995 double cd release called 'Alternative' - which collected the duo's b-sides from 1985 to 1994 - as it covers their b-sides and bonus tracks released between 1996 and 2009. All 38 tracks are remastered and the cd booklet will feature an interview with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe by Jon Savage - author of 'England's Dreaming' and 'Teenage'. You can pre-order 'Format' now from their official website here: http://www.petshopboysshop.co.uk/

And here's some even better PSB news - the gentlemen are currently at work on their eleventh studio album which is due for release next fall! Here's the cover art and tracklisting for 'Format':

Here's one of my more recent favorite PSB b-sides - this is 'Blue On Blue' - originally the b-side of their 2006 single 'Minimal' (and soon to be track 12 on disc two). It's production is very old school - reminiscent of their early pre-'Please' recordings with legendary New York producer Bobby Orlando... Enjoy!

Bonus Track! 'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas' (New Version) As much as I love many different types and styles of music, truth be told I'm not much of a fan of Christmas music. I find most of it quite terrible, and some of it even borderline offensive!

I feel the same way about Christmas itself - if it was just one day a year of related good times that would be awesome - but it's two full months of relentless advertising and whoopla every single flipping year. THAT'S ONE SIXTH OF OUR LIVES people - for one day. It should only be 1/365th of our lives - pehaps a titch more in leap years :) I think a lot more humans would actually enjoy it if it was. So if you plan on living to be 100 like myself, you'll likely be hearing about Christmas for 16.666 years of your life - sounds a bit (dare I say it) evil - doesn't it? I don't get why more people don't full on rebel against the ridonkulousness of it's relentless overhyping. No offence of course if you love every minute of it.

Consequently, when I started seeing some bloggers posting Christmas music last month I felt that they should have been hung up by their collective sacs. So it may not surprise you then that I posted a mere three Christmas songs last year - and I'm thinking I'll stick with that (tradition) this year. A trio is plenty - and as it's only two days away now, I figure that it's a reasonable time (for me) to begin to acknowledge the holiday's existence.

'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas' was first released as a fan club only single in 1997, but it was later remixed for an official release on their 2009 'Christmas' EP. I particularly like this as a Christmas song lyrically speaking because it takes a pretty realistic snapshot of the holidays, and I truly love snow - but despite all the dreams of white Christmas'szzz, in reality that seldom happens in many parts of the world. But it's not a sad song - it's a happy one! Vancouver's annual odds are one in 10 - I looked it up - so I'm hoping!

This is the 2009 'New Version' of 'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ 420th Post Of 2011! Classic! Rita Marley!

SummersRadio™ 420th Post Of 2011! Classic! Rita Marley - 'One Draw' (Extended Version) So apparently I've been rather busy blogging this year - this is my 420th post of the year! So let's celebrate Vancouver style - with some Jamaican style music!

Rita Marley began her singing career at age 18 as a member of the trio called the Soulettes - who were produced by Bob Marley. The two married in 1966 and she later became a member of the I Threes - his backup singers.

'One Draw' was a single from her debut solo album called 'Who Feels It Knows It' - which was released in 1982 - a year after Bob died of brain cancer. The song was banned from some radio stations for it's lyrical content - which no doubt helped it to go on and become one of the biggest selling reggae singles of all time!

This is the 'Extended Version' of Rita Marley's classic 'One Draw' - from the 12" single released on Shanachie Records - one of the world's largest independent labels ... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Duchess Leo!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Duchess Leo - 'Soul Cry'/ 'Let's Go, Just You & Me' Brooklyn duo Duchess Leo have released their follow up to October's 'These For Those: Vol. 1' EP with volume two - and like volume one they've made the EP available as a free download!

'These For Those: Vol. 2' features five tracks - four new songs plus a new 'Live In Studio' version of the song 'Bloom' from their debut full length album 'Golden Gray', which was released in January on the Whale Heart Records label. If either of the songs below are to your liking you can download them for free from their label's website here: http://store.whaleheartrecords.com/album/these-for-those-volume-2

You can also keep up with Duchess Leo on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/duchessleo?sk=info

First up we have my favorite track on the EP - track three which is called 'Soul Cry' - I really like the keyboards in this one... Enjoy!

This is track five from the 'These For Those: Vol. 2' EP called 'Let's Go, Just You & Me' - a guitar based instrumental that also includes some lovely strings and keyboard bits further in. Despite not having any lyrics, as the title suggests the song has a nice romantic feel to it - I think it's quite purdy... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Radiohead - 'The Daily Mail'/ 'Staircase' Radiohead have just released a new live video album and a new single this week! The video compilation is called 'The King Of Limbs - From The Basement' and is available on blu-ray, dvd, and digitally. It features 11 tracks - all eight from their 'King Of Limbs' album, plus the songs 'The Daily Mail', 'Staircase', their Record Store Day single from earlier this year called 'Supercollider' - and is released on their own Ticker Tape Ltd. label.

While the video album features live performances of the new songs 'The Daily Mail' and 'Staircase' - they have also been released as a separate two track single. I've had quite a history with Radiohead - I was a fan from the very beginning - there's a lot more to their debut album 'Pablo Honey' than just 'Creep'. In fact, they were my favorite band for many years - I even got to meet Thom Yorke once. However, following the release of 'Kid A' I've found them progressively less and less appealing. Thom seems to whine and mumble more than sing in recent years, and I've found many (but not all) of their songs either lacking in warmth, or a bit too disjointed for my liking. Well the good news is that Thom's vocals sound much more like his old (younger) self here - they're clearer - and you can make out the words!

First up we have the piano driven song 'The Daily Mail'... Enjoy!

This is Radiohead's other new song called 'Staircase' - it's a bit busy percussion wise, but the backing keyboards have a nice calm dreamlike quality to them... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music/ Remix! Jack Beats/ Leonard Cohen!

SummersRadio™ New Music/ Remix! Jack Beats/ Leonard Cohen! Jack Beats - 'End Of Love' (Oliver $ Remix)/ (Original Mix) Jack Beats are a duo from London consisting of Plus One from the Scratch Perverts and Beni G from The Mixologists. They've released their new single on the Deconstruction label called 'End Of Love' - the EP features three tracks - the original plus two remixes. 'End Of Love' is essentially a radical reworking of Leonard Cohen's classic song 'Dance Me To The End Of Love' from his 1984 album called 'Various Positions'.

First we have the rather housey 'Oliver $ Remix'... Enjoy!

This is the official video for Jack Beats 'End Of Love' - which uses an edited version of the 'Original Mix' - which incorporates electro, house, and even dubst*p. I realize that some hardcore Cohen fans may not be able to appreciate this - but I love him and I think these remixes work. I mean, the song does reference dancing - and the phrase the end of love could imply a journey towards something else, say perhaps a state of madness - and this remix is pretty crazy... Enjoy!

(p.s. more on Leonard Cohen himself tomorrow - cheers!)

SummersRadio™ Concert News! The Magnetic Fields!

The Magnetic Fields have just confirmed the details of their new album - and a tour that will bring them to Vancouver in March! It will be their first release of new material on the Merge Records label since their 1999 triple cd '69 Love Songs'. 'Love At The Bottom Of The Sea' will feature 16 tracks - here's the cover art and full tracklisting: (Owls's live under the sea, right? As always I see a number of cheeky song titles!)

14 Quick!
15 All She Cares About Is Mariachi

There's isn't any advanced audio available for 'Love At The Bottom Of The Sea' yet so we shall revist (just) a few (there are many!) of the band's finest past moments. 'I Thought You Were My Boyfriend' was a single from the 2004 album 'i' - this is the excellent (and totally revamped) 'Extended Mix' that was released on 12" and cd single. I love the line 'Some guys have a beer and they'll do anything' :) ... Enjoy!

More European dates are set to be announced - you can keep up with all news on The Magnetic Fields - as well as Stephin Merritt's solo work, and his other bands The 6ths, Future Bible Heroes, and The Gothic Archies - on his/ their official website called The House Of Tomorrow here: http://houseoftomorrow.com/index.php

This is my favorite song from the 2008 fuzzed up release 'Distortion', the sound of which was influenced by one of my favorite guitar bands - The Jesus And Mary Chain - and Merritt's lyrics are bang on highlarious. This is 'Too Drunk To Dream' - yeah, I know that feeling... Enjoy!

'Washington D.C.' is one of over five dozen (!) wonderful songs on their 1999 release '69 Love Songs' - who knew you could write so many songs about one thing! :p I love the sincerity in singer Claudia Gonson's voice - it's made me weep on more than one occasion :) Although I've never been to Washington D.C. I have perhaps a distorted view of it - by association as being the centre of some rather dirty politics at times - but Gonson (and of course Merritt's lyrics) make(s) it sound utterly and irresistably beautiful... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Bonus Tracks! Moby!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Moby featuring Inyang Bassey - 'The Right Thing' (Sharam Jey Remix)/ Donna Summer - 'I Feel Love' (Patrick Cowley Remix)/ Moby - 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?' Moby has just released a new EP this week - for the latest single(s) from his 'Destroyed' album! The EP is a double A-side release for the songs 'The Right Thing' and 'After' - featuring five remixes of 'The Right Thing' and two of 'After' - making them the third and fourth singles respectively from his 'Destroyed' album, released on his own Little Idiot label.

If there's one thing I've learned about music it's that everything is a product of everything that's come before it. New songs (or portions of them) will almost always sound something like some older song - be it unintentional, inspired by, or simply a complete ripoff! And in clubland there's one song that's been imitated and duplicated far too many times to count - and justifiably so - Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love'. Today we have example # 3,789 (I counted) :) with the new 'Sharam Jey' remix of 'The Right Thing' (please note that this version is edited slightly - you get an extra minute and 15 seconds of disco flavored goodness on the EP!) ... Enjoy!

Bonus Track #1! Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love' was released as a single in the summer of 1977 at the height of the disco era - however there are some who say (myself included) that this song was also the birth of techno! The reason for this is as follows - previous disco hits had always included a backing band and/ or orchestra - but 'I Feel Love' was the first song of it's kind to use an entirely synthesized backing track.

The song was written by Summer - along with producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte - and first appeared on her concept album called 'I Remember Yesterday'. The album featured seven songs (plus one reprise) - five of which were released as singles. The following year Patrick Cowley remixed and extended the track from just under six minutes to 15:45 - and in the process (aside from perhaps the guitar solo) further developed it's techno blueprint. Most instrumental parts of this song stand up just fine against some of this year's finest new releases on labels like 1605 - and this remix is flipping 33 years old! This is the 'Patrick Cowley Remix' of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love' in it's full unedited glory... Enjoy!

Bonus Track #2! I had lunch with Moby once - he didn't eat anything though. True story. Picture it... Vancouver - summer of 1999. His album 'Play' had been released just two months prior and was selling modestly at best - but there were a few pockets in the country where it was doing really well including here (it later went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide). 'Bodyrock' had just been released as the second single, and as part of the album's promotion his record company arranged a meet and greet luncheon for selected music industry types. I remember thinking about what I might say to him when we first met - and how funny it was just thinking of saying the words 'Hi Moby'!

The lunch turned out to be a bit of an embarrassment for the record company - as it was well known that Moby was a vegan - and the restaurant didn't have anything on their menu that was! He asked for a few different options that they couldn't really accommodate - and then they offered to make a salad but that's not what he wanted, so he just had water! The coolest part was when I asked him if 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?' might be a future single because it was my favorite song on the album - and he said that it was going to be the next single and that they were making a fully animated video for it!

Here's the video for Moby's classic track 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?' - featuring vocals sampled from a 1953 recording by The Shining Light Gospel Choir - and the animated introduction of his rather cute 'Little Idiot' character... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Music News + Rare Track! Underworld!

SummersRadio™ Music News! Underworld - 'Rez'/ 'Why Why Why' Underworld have just announced that they will be the official Music Directors of the opening ceremonies for London's 2012 Summer Olympic games! And - they're also releasing two new compilations next month!

The duo will work with British filmmaker and producer Danny Boyle (who's been appointed as the Artistic Director of the opening ceremonies) and will be responsible for all the music featured in the three hour ceremony happening on July 27th (my birthday!) 2012. Underworld have collaborated with Danny Boyle numerous times over the years - starting with his 1996 film Trainspotting which prominently featured their songs 'Born Slippy' and 'Dark Train'. Underworld have also provided music for his films 'A Life Less Ordinary', 'The Beach' and 'Sunshine' - and last year they collaborated on the British National Theatre production of 'Frankenstein'.

Karl Hyde says that their goal will be 'to leave people with a musical memory of the show rather than a purely visual one. It's a great honour to be asked to do this and one we're taking very seriously'. I'm not a big fan of the Olympic games - having endured many of the associated hassles of hosting the games first hand here in Vancouver last year - but I suspect that I'll still be tuning in to this one just for the music!

Before I get into the tracklist details of their two new compilations let's revisit one of their finest songs - this is 'Rez'... Enjoy!

Underworld are releasing two new compilations on January 23rd - one called 'Anthology 1992 - 2012' - and one called 'A Collection'. 'A Collection' will be a single disc set featuring 16 songs spanning their lengthy career - including three new '2011 Edits' of older tracks. 'Anthology 1992 - 2012' is essentially an update of their 2003 double cd compilation '1992 - 2002' but with a bit of a twist. The tracklisting has been changed - leaving out some of their lesser known songs in favor of newer singles - and a third bonus disc of previously unreleased tracks and rarities has been added!

Here's the artwork and tracklisting for 'A Collection':

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Ryan Riback & John Baptiste!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Ryan Riback & John Baptiste - 'Kids These Days' (Silversix Remix) Melbourne Australia's Ryan Riback and John Baptiste have released a new EP of remixes for their new single 'Kids These Days'! 'Kids These Days' was first released last month on a four track EP featuring the original mix and three remixes on the Pop Rox Muzik label. They've now also just released three more new remixes on the Suckmusic label!

'Kids These Days' is a bit of a social commentary that addresses some of the social habits and issues facing kids today. And it's about time I say - I mean they talk about drinking and misbehaving, taking drugs - listening to techno music even! Well I never. I mean, come on. I certainly don't go around drinking and... oh. And clearly I never take any drugs or... um, wait. And techno music... hmmm. Ok kids - Party On! :)

This is the 'Silversix Remix' of  Ryan Riback & John Baptiste's track 'Kids These Days'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Paperfangs!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Paperfangs - 'Lifelong' I fell in love with Finland's Paperfangs just over a year ago I reckon - in fact it was on November 9th 2010 - a Tuesday. I like their mix of both acoustic and electronic instruments - and their use of samples. I also quite like the singer - his melancholy but romantic voice reminds me a bit of Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello and in another way Jon Marsh from The Beloved. Back in 2010 I could only feature one song per post due to Fb issues so I posted their first two songs separately. You can revisit one of their first releases - and their very first video - for 'Books' here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2010/11/summersradio-new-music-paperfangs.html

Their song 'Oh I Wandered'
http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2010/11/summersradio-new-music-paperfangs.html made my Best Of 2010 list last year. Speaking of which - it's getting near that time again - I've been making some mental notes for a while now actually - so coming soon then!

Today we have a brand new Paperfangs song called 'Lifelong' that's just been released on Soundcloud this week! If it's to your liking it's available as a free download here: http://soundcloud.com/paperfangs/lifelong (or click on the download arrow below) and you can keep up with the band on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Paperfangs

'Lifelong' features an enthusiastic (and possibly insane) sounding child's vocal sample - great keyboard sounds - and the wonderfully simple yet romantic lyric(s) 'You said lifelong/ is it still on'. It also has some kind of cool bell - not cow per se - perhaps tubular :) ... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Age Of Love!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Age Of Love - 'Age Of Love' (Watch out For Stella Mix) I mentioned yesterday that parts of Harvey McKay's new song 'Supercell' reminded me of the club classic 'Age Of Love' - and the song has been in my head pretty much ever since - so I think my brain wants me to post it!

'Age Of Love' was a one off project written by two producers - Italy's Bruno Sanchioni and Belgium's Roger Samijn - released under the same name as the song itself. The song was first released in 1990 on the Belgian label DiKi Records (DiKi standing for Disco King) and it featured some rather terribly cheesy sounding male lead vocals. It wasn't until 1992 when it was re-released on London's React label featuring 'The Jam & Spoon Remixes' (thankfully sans male vocals - but keeping the female vocals of Dutch model and singer Karen Mulder!) that it became a club anthem.

Jam and Spoon were a production duo from Frankfurt Germany consisting of Rolf Ellmer aka Jam El Mar and Markus Loffel aka Mark Spoon (who sadly died of a heart attack in 2006). It is their 'Watch Out For Stella Club Mix' ('Stella' being the name of one of their own landmark songs released the same year - you can revisit a remix of it here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/02/summersradio-classic-remix-jam-spoon.html) that has withstood the test of time to become a true club classic.

It's the initial build up of this remix - especially the keyboard bit between 1:50 and 2:35 - that lifts you up and leaves you suspended in mid air for a few seconds - that has undoubtably left many people (myself included) feeling a bit like this the first time they heard it in a club... :)

This is a fan made video - as a tribute to Mark Spoon - for Age Of Love's track 'Age Of Love' - Jam & Spoon's 'Watch Out For Stella Club Mix'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Harvey McKay! Alan Fitzpatrick!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Harvey McKay - 'Supercell' (Original Mix)/ Alan Fitzpatrick - 'Running Backwards' (Original Mix) Sweden's finest (and one of the world's finest) techno label(s) Drumcode are celebrating their 15th anniversary with the release of a brand new compilation fittingly titled '15 Years Of Drumcode'. This compilation may not be what one might expect though - it's no greatest hits collection - they're not flogging the past - they're flogging the future! :)

'15 Years Of Drumcode' features 28 tracks - and all of them are brand new! It actually makes sense for a forward thinking label - especially when they're clearly in their prime. Actually after listening to these 28 tracks, this compilation suggests to me that their best is still yet to come. There's no shortage of quality tunes here - I could easily feature this compilation over a few different posts. However, for now I've chosen my two favorite songs so far - if they're to your liking you can check out some of the other 26 new songs on the compilation (which is currently available as a download exclusively on Beatport) here:
http://www.beatport.com/#release/15-years-of-drumcode/838119 and '15 Years Of Drumcode' is also available physically as a double cd.

First up we have Glasgow dj/ producer Harvey McKay with his song called 'Supercell' - the 27th track on the compilation. I totally love the superbly hypntoic production on this one - it reminds me a bit of one of my all time favorite club tunes - Age Of Love's 'Age Of Love'. This song chugs along like a magical runaway train ride - through space! I it... Enjoy!

This is another standout track on the new '15 Years Of Drumcode' compilation - 'Running Backwards' from Southampton's Alan Fitzpatrick... Enjoy!
